2014-2015 Season Programs
1st and 2nd Grade Program
The RFGBA for grades 1-2 is an introductory level program. The purpose is to
teach basic skills and terminology in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Every
girl can benefit from her participation, regardless of her skill level. Our
goal is that each girl has a positive learning experience and contributes to
the competitive nature of the game. With the introduction of basketball at this
level, the girls will learn about being part of a team and the sportsmanship
that comes along with it . We hope this carries on through their school years
and every girl will be part of or be supportive of the River Falls Girl's
Basketball program. Go Wildcats!
3rd and 4th Grade Program
The 3rd and 4th grade programs will be combined to form a Mini-WNBA in-house
(River Falls only) league similar to the boys program. The Mini-WNBA will start
with skills development sessions in November, followed by team skills clinics.
Finally, players will be evaluated in placed on balanced teams for River Falls
Mini-WNBA league games. The goal of this program is to introduce young players
to team play with friends and classmates and without the pressure of traveling.
The second half of the 4th grade season includes traveling tournaments. 4th graders will play
neighboring towns in four game tournament Saturdays starting in January and ending in February.
5th grade program
Fifth grade will focus on building and extending passing, dribbling, shooting and
defensiveskills with more exposure to real game situations via 5 tournaments
with 4 games each throughout the season. We will focus on teamwork, good
sportsmanship and an overall better understanding of the game of basketball.
Our goal by the end of Fifth grade is for the girls to have a sound understanding
of all terms related to playing the game of basketball, improved basic skills and
success on the court. Our practices will be roughly 90 minutes long and
structured in a way to bring continuity to the drills that build on the
aforementioned skills. We will focus on having fun with our drills during practice,
work individually with girls at times to ensure they are progressing along with
their peers and work hard during these practices to be prepared for our
upcoming tournaments. Our season will start in mid-October and run until late
February or early March.
6th Grade Program
The sixth grade girl’s basketball program seeks to build on the fundamentals
learned in previous years. Ball handling, passing, screening, triple threat
position, and defensive skills are stressed. Game situations are reviewed for
better understanding. Life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-
confidence are emphasized. Respecting our teammates, opponents, coaches
and officials are also highlighted. We work hard and try to have fun at the same
time during practice. We practice twice a week for 90 minutes. The first 60
minutes working on fundamentals and the final 30 minutes working on game
situations – offense, defense, press breaks, etc. Our season runs from October
until early March. We typically participate in 6 to 8 tournaments during that time,
including one home tournament.
7th Grade Program
The seventh grade girl’s basketball program will build upon the skills developed
in the prior years. Passing, shooting, ball-handling and defensive skills and
techniques will be refined and sharpened. We will focus on teamwork, good
sportsmanship and an overall better understanding of game concepts and
strategies. The girls will be exposed to various types of offensive and defensive
schemes. Team strategies to adapt and succeed against these schemes will be
emphasized. Practices will be approximately 90 minutes long and will be broken
into three parts – individual skill development, team drills, and game-like
situations.
8th Grade Program
The eighth grade girl’s basketball program will build upon the skills developed in
the prior years and prepare them, both physically and mentally, for high school
basketball. Passing, shooting, ball-handling and defensive skills and
techniques will be refined and sharpened. An emphasis will be placed on
developing a thorough understanding of game concepts and strategies. The
girls will be exposed to various types of offensive and defensive schemes.
Team strategies to adapt and succeed against these schemes will be
emphasized. We will create a climate that fosters the development of skill and
sportsmanship by striving for excellence, establishing an optimistic philosophy
and becoming positive role models. We will develop and elicit a humble attitude
whether winning or losing. Practices will be approximately 120 minutes long and
will be broken into three parts – individual skill development, team drills, and
game-like situations. Our season will typically run from early-October through
December.
